Ashland Contemporary Theatre in collaboration with Livia Genise Productions presents “The Good German“ by David Wiltse, directed by Livia Genise, April 6 – April 21.
Set in Nazi Germany, Wiltse’s play is an intense drama that explores prejudice, cultural identity, duty, patriotism, and the strategies we employ to survive. Who do we have to become to make it through perilous times and how do we justify our choices?
Beginning in the late 1930’s, esteemed chemistry professor Karl Vogel shelters German Jew Wilhelm Braun in his home for years at the request of his wife Gretel and helped by his friend, Seimi. The play asks the question: to what extent would you go to protect someone you personally dislike (and are prejudiced about) against your own government that has descended into barbaric “solutions”?
Together again for their third joint venture, Livia Genise and Jeannine Grizzard have chosen to present “the Good German” as a staged reading in order to shine a light on the play’s themes without undue emphasis on the scenery of World War Two. Returning to the stage after “Judgment at Nuremberg” in 2017, actors Ian Wessler and Heiland Hoff play Karl and Seimi, with Bob Brazeau as Braun and Kristen Caron as Gretel.
